Big spoon, little spoon

There's sometimes nothing better than getting into a freshly made bed. It's like a big warm hug and the fresh linen smell encourages you to breathe deeply. What makes my smile even bigger is when my hubby rolls over and gives me a cuddle as I dose off thinking about, well, just how exhausted I am. This got me thinking.

As I've progressed up the ladder in my career I've come to notice that the TLC stops. Perhaps it's because I'm too busy going from one meeting to the next. Or because I'm on the leadership team I sometimes find it tricky to join in with the banter for fear of compromising myself. Or perhaps it's because the culture at my company is changing and it seems like we've just got to be focused on growth and meeting the numbers at the end of each quarter.

Either way, I can often go through a day with no one asking me how I am or offering to grab me lunch. My team are great, don't get me wrong, they make an excellent cuppa after all. But we spend more time at work than we do with our family - so we have to look out for each other.

So this week - more than usual - I'm making an effort to say thank you to someone, to congratulate them on passing their driving test, celebrate a birthday with a beautiful pressie and just be 'human', 'straight up' and 'fun' - values that my organisation holds.

As you climb the leadership ladder you find yourself being the 'big spoon'. But some days, just for a minute, I'd quite like to be the little spoon.
